Football icon, Stephen Keshi dies at 54LIKE
Nigerian football legend, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi was pronounced dead in the early hours of Wednesday in Benin City, his family has announced. He was 54.
Keshi was without doubt, one of the most iconic captains of the Super Eagles in his playing days. He was also a former coach of the Super Eagles and would be remembered as the only Nigerian coach to have won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013. He also achieved the feat of becoming the second person to win the African trophy both as a player and a coach, following Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary.
He represented Nigeria from 1982, at age 20, till 1994, winning 64 caps, most of the time captaining the Super Eagles and scoring 9 goals from his position as a central defender.
Apart from the Nigerian national team, Stephen Keshi also coached Togo at the World Cup, as well as Mali.
He is the fifth member of the all-conquering 1994 team to die, following Uche Okafor, Thompson Oliha, Rashidi Yekini and Wilfred Agbonavbare.
