 The Federal Government has declared Friday, April 7, and Monday, April 10, as Public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced this in Abuja on Wednesday, April 5.

In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore, on Wednesday, April 5, Aregbesola urged Christians to emulate the qualities of selflessness, camaraderie, forgiveness, kindness, love, peace and patience that Jesus Christ demonstrated through His earthly ministry.

The minister urged Christians and other Nigerians to use this year’s Easter season to pray for an end to the country’s security challenges.

“Security is everybody’s business. I, therefore, urge Nigerians and foreigners resident in our country to display a high sense of citizenship and public spiritedness by supporting the efforts of all security agencies in bringing peace and security of lives and property of the citizenry,” Aregbesola said.

The minister assured that the Federal Government was taking all necessary steps to guarantee a peaceful transfer of power following the conclusion of the election process.

While wishing Christians a peaceful Easter celebration, he also urged them to love their neighbours by performing acts of kindness and showing charity, with the wealthy sharing their possessions with the less fortunate nearby.

Aregbesola reassured Nigerians that the country was on the route to greatness and urged everyone to use their creative energies constructively to fully realise the impending prosperity.

CAN to States: reopen all worship centres


President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Ayokunle, on Tuesday called on state governments yet to reopen worship centres to do so.
Ayokunle described the continuous lockdown order on places of worship by some states as unacceptable and unreasonable.
Some states like Lagos and Ogun are yet to reopens worship centres due to coronavirus pandemic.
A statement in Abuja by his Special Assistant, (Media and Communications), Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the CAN boss said: “The President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence, Rev Dr Samson ‘Supo Ayokunle, on behalf of the Association, has called on all State governments that are yet to reopen churches under their watches to do so now because the continued lockdown order on the places of worship is no longer acceptable and reasonably justified.
“Despite the directive given by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 with regards to the re-opening of places of worship nationwide, some states like Lagos and Ogun are yet to allow worship places, especially churches, to be reopened. What sin have the places of worship committed?
“With the sudden emergence of the coronavirus pandemic, the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at all levels, agreed with the government on the need to close down the places of worship, economy, schools and every other facet of life.
“But with the reopening of the economy, especially the markets (both organized and the unorganised markets) along with the plan to reopen airports and schools, the closure of churches anywhere in the country is no longer tenable and acceptable. In what way are the opened and road side markets more organized than the church which warranted their opening?
“Is it not our members in the places of worship that do go to markets and other sectors opened? Why are they allowed to go to markets and disallowed from going to places of worship? Is it because the marketers cannot contact the virus in the markets and airports?
“It is our opinion that while the government and other relevant stakeholders are working hard to get cure for the COVID-19 pandemic, the Church too has a role to play by seeking for divine solutions as well”.
CAN appealed to the Lagos, Ogun and other state governments where churches are still under lockdown to: “relax it for God’s sake”.
Ayokunle said: “As much as we believe that COVID-19 deserves attention, it is our belief that the affected state governments would not turn a deaf ear to our quest but allow worship to return to places of worship”.

Murder of Catholic priest: We are in tears, agony – CAN

THE Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has requested that worship centres be allowed to go beyond one hour.
The association stated this during a meeting with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in Abuja on Thursday.
CAN’s General Secretary Joseph Daramola said the one hour timing would not be enough for services, adding that it should be extended to at least 90 minutes.
He urged Christians to adhere to the guidelines, and ensure safety at all time.
FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Bello released guidelines on reopening of places of worship in Abuja.
According to the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Anthony Ogunleye, the minister said all places of worship must sign up to full compliance with all aspects of non- pharmaceutical interventions required to protect the public from COVID-19, including but not limited to: “Ensuring the supply of running water and soap/alcohol sanitisers at entry and exit points and in all high-contact locations, including bathrooms; worshippers must sanitise their hands before entry; Provision of temperature checks before entry; mandatory use of face masks;
“Strongly discourage all close contacts, including shaking of hands, hugging, kissing, handing out of materials and sharing of worship implements including prayer mats, musical organs, microphones etc;
“Churches and mosques within the FCT must limit the capacity of their facilities to allow for physical distancing of at least two meters between persons.
“Limit congregational contact times, with places of worship only opening for regular church and mosque services; churches are to open from 5am and close by 8pm and each service shall be for a maximum of 1 hour with an interval of 30 mins in between services to allow time for disinfection;
“Mosques are to open 15 minutes before Adhan and close 10 minutes after prayers for the five prayers. Waiting period between Adhan and Iqamah should not be more than 10 minutes. Prayers are to be shortened to reduce duration of contact between congregations”.
The meeting, the statement said, also acknowledged that the situation of COVID-19 in the FCT is still at a very critical stage and recognises that there is the danger that if the established protocols were not adhered to, the cases of those infected and fatalities will increase.
The minister said: “It is therefore essential that all residents of the FCT take personal responsibility in ensuring strict compliance”.

Church disowns woman caught in Anambra shrine

Community decries dearth of doctors
Members of United Voice of Sabbath Churches of Nigeria (UVSCN) in Anambra State, an umbrella body of Sabbath churches, have disociated themselves from the woman recently accused of fetish practices in Agulu, Anaocha council of the state.
The woman was reportedly caught by residents of the area making incantations dressed in a white garment inside a shrine prohibited to women in a manner akin to Sabbath worshippers’s style.
The residents had, on sighting her at the shrine, raised the alarm, and  youths in the area invaded her residence and reportedly destroyed the fetish items discovered there.
Spokesman of the body, Rev Arinze Chukwuka, at a briefing, said, “The general public should stop linking the woman with Sabbath worship because she has no identity as a Sabbath observer nor operate a Sabbath Church.
“I led a team of clergy assigned to investigate the incident following a barrage of publications in social media and local radio stations but after interrogating her, she confessed she is a traditionalist not a Sabbatharian priest.
“The members of the public are warned that Sabbath Churches are Sabbath observers who believe in the Ten Commandments of God and everybody who reads the Bible knows that the first of the Commandments is that people should not worship other gods in any form like wooden images.
“The woman couldn’t have been a Sabbath observer because she believes and worships wooden images as seen in her house.”

President Muhammadu Buhari and members of his family on Sunday observed the Eid-El-Fitr prayer at the presidential quarters in line with the protocol against mass gathering issued by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protocol of social distancing was also exhibited during the two-raka’at prayer.
President Buhari on May 22 pledged to conduct his Eid prayers with his family at home as directed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is also the President General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI),
The President said, “for the first time in recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the people’s spiritual, social and economic lives.
”This year’s fasting period was particularly challenging for Muslims because they had to forgo many important aspects of their daily worship, including the routine congregations for prayer and the recitation and interpretation of the Holy Qur’an as well as traveling for the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah.
“It is not easy to give up many of these important duties and activities, but it became imperative to do so in order to control or limit the spread of this deadly disease.

Breaking: Buhari to observe Eid-el-Fitr with family at home

With the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations around the corner and the month-long Ramadan fast coming to an end, President Muhammadu Buhari will be conducting his Eid prayers with his family at home.
This is in observance of the lockdown measures in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, put in place “to save lives and protect people from all dangers.”
According to a statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, this is also in line with the directive of the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III suspending Eid congregational prayers across the country as well as the protocol against mass gathering issued by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
Further to this, the President who has traditionally shared the joyous moment with top government officials, political leaders, community heads, Muslim and Christian religious leaders and children, will not be receiving these homages in a bid to stop the coronavirus from further spreading.

JNI, others back Sultan’s pray-at-home directive

THE Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has backed the position of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), asking Muslims to observe their eid prayer at home due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Wednesday, said the Eid-el-Fitr is not a compulsory religious activity (fard), if observing it would undermine the fundamental purpose of Shari’ah.
He listed security, a multifaceted concept which includes personal, community, national, environmental and health components, among others, as reasons for avoiding congregational prayers.
JNI’s Fatwa Committee, in a statement by its Secretary General, Sheikh Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, noted that the restriction will be in states where there is lockdown on eid day, while in the states where movement is relaxed, Muslims can say their prayer at the eid ground.
Also, the Chief Imam of Lagos State, Sheikh Sulaimon Abou-Nolla, and Muslim leaders in Delta State have thrown their weight behind the call for Muslims to observe the eid prayers at home.
This, they said, would flatten the curve of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Sheikh Abou-Nolla, at a briefing on Thursday in Lagos, said the present situation does not warrant congregation prayers.
Delta State Information Commissioner Charles Aniagwu said Muslim leaders agreed to celebrate the Sallah at home because of the huge crowd being expected at the eid praying ground.
