With the police in tow, some residents in Festac Town have protested against what they called the refusal of Eko Distribution Company (EKDC) to give them prepaid meters.
The refusal, they claimed, was a ploy to continue issusing them estimated bills.
The protesters, under the aegis of members of Festac Town Residents Association (FTRA), chanted solidarity songs for hours. The protesters were mostly retirees and they were escorted by the police.
They carried placards with inscriptions, such as, “No light, no pay”, “No prepaid meters, no payment”, “God hate, darkness”, “Stop estimated billing”, among others.
FTRA President Shola Fakorede said their agitation became necessary following EKDC’s refusal to address their grievances.
He added: “We were constrained to make our feelings known. The agitation will continue until our demands are met.”
Fakorede alleged that they were being exploited by EKEDC, “as it forces exorbitant bills on us.”
He recalled that they had protested in the past to no avail.
He urged the residents to be peaceful during the protest and hailed their orderliness so far.
“We will not to relent until every house in Festac Town gets prepaid meter.
“We have been very peaceful. I want us to continue in that manner. As we embark on the struggle, I’m sure God will win the battle for us,” Fakorede said.
EKEDC Assistant General Manager Mr. Sam Edoho said the protest shocked him, “as we have never taken their grievances for granted.”
Edoho, the firm’s circle coordinator for Lagos West, said: “EKEDC has done a lot about metering because we don’t take customers’ complaints for granted. They don’t know that it is when we have adequate metering that we can record huge returns. In this district, Festac has always been given priority in terms of meter distribution.
“I directed my men to do the enumeration of some areas so that they could be metered. Some people did not make their apartments available for the last meters that were supplied. Until the released ones are mounted, the company can’t give out new ones. We can’t give everybody prepaid meter at the same time. People must understand this.”
