Police officer electrocuted in Abuja

Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Lasaka Habila has been electrocuted while trimming a tree in Garki area of Abuja.

A cutlass was seen at the scene believed to have been used by the victim to cut down branches.

The officer, who was seen stuck on the tree, was eventually brought down by the Search and Rescue team of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Reacting to the incident, the Director-General (FEMA) Idriss Abba advised Federal Capital Territory (FCT) residents to always seek approval from the FCT Parks and Recreation Department before cutting down any tree.

The FEMA boss also noted that in the rainy season, most trees would bloom and come in contact with electricity cables which may transmit high currents through the leaves and branches.

The officer’s body was taken to the National Hospital by the FEMA search and rescue team where he was confirmed dead.

IGP deploys investigative, forensic support to Edo

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has deployed more investigative and forensic support to the Edo State Police Command to unravel the death of Miss Vera Uwaila who was raped and killed by unknown men.

Uwaila was a first year student of the University of Benin.

It was gathered she had gone to read in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Miracle Sanctuary Mega Parish, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City when the unfortunate incident occurred.

It was reported that the men forced their way into the church, where they raped and struck Uwaila in the head with a fire extinguisher.

In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, on Monday, the IGP promised the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to book.

“As part of deliberate and concerted efforts by the Nigeria Police High Command to unravel the circumstances surrounding the brutal attack and unfortunate death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omosuwa in Benin, Edo State on 28th and 30th May, 2020 respectively, the Inspector General of Police has deployed additional investigations aids and forensic support to Edo State Police Command to complement and expedite actions in the ongoing investigations into the unfortunate incident.

“The IGP, while condemning the attack, commiserates with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. He calls for calm and assures that the Force will surely bring the perpetrators of the callous act to book in the shortest possible time,” the statement read.

Bobrisky arrested in Lagos

Operatives of the Inspector General Police (IG) Monitoring Unit on Thursday arrested popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye alias Bobrisky.

Okuneye was arrested around Lekki by a team of policemen from Abuja over alleged money issues with a woman.

The Nation reports that this arrest is coming months after the cross-dresser was detained by the police over his disagreement with an Abuja public official.

Although details of the case were sketchy, it was gathered that the policemen who entered Okuneye’s white Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) had made their mission known to the Lagos State police command before proceeding.

Bobrisky recently had an altarcation with a Nigerian woman in diaspora over sales and sponsorship for an artificial eyelash brand.

Policemen first took Okuneye to a police station on the island where he was reportedly detained for a while and later granted bail.

Force spokesman DCP Frank Mba said, “Yes, Bobrisky was arrested in the early hours of today following a petition by a Nigerian woman that the cross-dresser collected N30m from her for sales but did not keep to the end of the deal.”

Curfew: Policeman kills pedestrian in attempt to impound motorcycle

There was chaos at the Obabiyi area of Ikotun on Wednesday night after stray bullet from a policeman, Inspector Charles Okoro, killed a father of two identified as Fatai Oladipolupo, 28.

The incident occurred around 10pm while Oladipupo was said to have stepped out of his residence to buy bread in order to break his fast.

It was gathered that the policeman whom residents alleged was notorious in seizing and extorting motorcycles, had tried to shoot a rider who dodged him.

As soon as the cyclist made a narrow escape from the cop, he was said to have fired a shot but the bullet instead hit the man whose wife gave birth two weeks ago.

According to one Modupeola, people gathered at the scene in no time while the policeman fled as soon as he realised he had killed somebody.

She said youths in the neighborhood defied the curfew and were spoiling for war.

The Nation gathered that the corpse of the deceased man was at the scene for a while before policemen from Ikotun Division came and whisked it away.

Contacted, police spokesman Bala Elkana said Okoro has been arrested and would undergo orderly room trial.

“The Inspector is subjected to internal disciplinary procedures, known as Orderly Room Trial at the State Provost Department and if found guilty, he will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Yaba for prosecution in conventional court.

“Investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident. The Commissioner of Police condoles with the family and friends of the deceased and calls for calm. He assures them that justice will prevail. The public will be updated on the outcome of the investigation,” he said.

IGP, others accused of frustrating verdict on sealed Kano rice factory

THE Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, and the Kano State Commissioner of Police have been accused of working to frustrate the enforcement of a judgment directing the immediately reopening of a rice factory sealed by the Kano State government.

Tiamin Rice Limited and two others, who are owners of the rice factory, made the allegation in a fresh document they filed against a motion by the IGP and Kano police chief, seeking to either stay or set aside the judgment given by a Federal High Court in Abuja on May 4, 2020.

Tiamin Rice Limited, Tiamin Multi Services Global and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim (the judgment creditors) also accused the IGP and the Kano police commissioner of frustrating efforts to rescue the workers trapped in the factory since it was forcefully sealed by agents of the state government on April 18 this year.

The Tiamin Rice processing factory, located at C14 AA Shehu House, Amana City, Zaria Road, Kano, was sealed by the state government, claiming that it was too close to an isolation centre created for COVID-19 patients.

Tiamin Rice Limited, Tiamin Multi Services Global and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim challenged the state government’s action in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja, in view of the lockdown and other restrictions put in place by the Federal Government.

In a judgment on May 4, Justice Okon Abang faulted the Kano State government’s decision to seal the factory, ordered its immediate reopening and awarded N300 million damages in favour of the applicants.

Justice Abang held, among others, that the closure of the factory, without a valid court order, violated the rights of the applicants and the exemption accorded food production companies by the Federal Government.

Rather than comply with the judgment, the IGP and Kano police chief filed a fresh motion on May 15, 2020, asking the court to either stay the execution of the judgment or set it aside.

They claimed that the lockdown announced by the Federal Government prevented them from participating in the earlier hearing conducted in the case, which lead to the May 4 judgment.

But in their counter-affidavit, the applicants queried the interest of the IGP and the Kano police chief in seeking to frustrate the execution of the judgment that did not directly affect them.

They argued that the new motion was not only designed by the IGP and the Kano police chief to frustrate the execution of the judgment, it was an abuse of the court’s process since they had already filed a notice of appeal against the judgment.

The applicants added the conduct of the IGP and the Kano CP “are, on the facts of this case, a direct challenge to the authority of the court and it demonstrates impunity, showing that they have the right to ignore and dare the court.

“They have shown inhuman treatment to innocent employees of the judgment creditors trapped in the facility since 18th April 2020.

“The judgment debtors do not care even for the lives and welfare of staff for these innocent trapped and locked up in the factory premises.”

They prayed the court to reject the fresh motion by the IGP and the Kano CP, and ordered them to comply with the judgement given on May 4 failing which they would be liable to be held for contempt.

Lawyer to the judgment creditors, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) on Thursday said he had served the judgment debtors, including the IGP and the Kano police chief with his clients’ counter-affidavit.

Lawyer to the IGP and Kano police chief, Celestine Odo, confirmed being served, but sought a short time to enable him file a reply.

Although the Kano State government and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are also judgment debtors in the matter, they were not represented yesterday in court.

In a ruling, Justice Abang ordered that hearing notice be served on the state government and the NSCDC through email, due to the existing inter-state lockdown.

The judge adjourned till May 27 for hearing.
