The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, on Friday said it would start prosecuting students caught for cultism and selling of bed space in the institution to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Taiwo Akande, who said this while administering oath on 3,690 matriculating students of the institution lamented that mere rustication was no longer working. She said the school would no longer condone any act of illegality, including cyber crime, cultism and illegal sale of bed spaces by students.
Advising students against taking steps that could alter the academic calendar, she added that the institution had made the passing of all entrepreneurship courses a prerequisite for graduation.
She said, “Management has put in place a vigilant security network to closely monitor students and sniff out the bad eggs. Such unscrupulous elements will not be allowed to dent or tarnish the hard earned image of this institution. Anybody caught will be made to face the full weight of the law.
“It is most disturbing these days to discover that many students sell their bed spaces at exorbitant amounts to fellow students after being allocated bed spaces in the hostel. If detected such students would not only be rusticated, he will be prosecuted as well.”
The Rector disclosed that any student that excelled in his academic career will be rewarded to promote academic excellence the institution was noted for.
